What is Mylar®? - Mylar ® is a registered trademark of DuPont Teijin Films. Mylar ® is a clear and durable polyester film material made from Biaxially-oriented Polyethylene Terephthalate (Bo-PET) that was invented back in 1952. Over the years, Mylar® has been used for many reasons, from providing critical protective layering in NASA space suits to many other different industrial uses. At MylarPro, however, we specifically use this space age material to provide an effective, durable and long lasting oxygen barrier to keep your food fresh for 40+ years. Mylar Pro Bags are made in the USA and they combine the super high tensile strength and unique oxygen barrier properties of Mylar ® with a specially designed outer layer of metalized foil to create an exceptional light barrier too. When combined with our FDA approved Oxygen Absorbers, this perfect combination will help prevent the nutritional content of your food from degrading over time by eliminating any prolonged and harmful exposure to Oxygen, Light, or Moisture.

What are the main items that affect my food's shelf life? - There are basically four main items that will affect the duration of how long your stored food will last:  the amount of Oxygen contacting the food, the amount of Humidity present inside the container, the amount of Light that the food is exposed to, and the actual room Temperature where the food is stored.

To simplify all of this, here are four easy rules of thumb that you would want to use to ensure the longest shelf life possible for your stored food:

  1. Make sure that your stored food is exposed to as little Oxygen as possible (using our high efficient Oxygen Absorber in our virtually airtight Mylar Pro Bags will easily solve this issue)
  2. Make sure there is as little Moisture or Humidity inside the food’s container as possible. (somewhere under 15% is most desirable)
  3. Make sure that as little Light as possible reaches your stored food (the special foil layer built into our Mylar Pro Bags virtually blocks out all the light and easily solves this issue)
  4. Make sure that you store your food containers in a cool location (the sweet spot seems to be between 33 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit).

See our more detailed article about these "four enemies that threaten your long term stored foods".

What is an Oxygen Absorber? - An Oxygen Absorber is a plastic packet of material used by the food industry to prolong the shelf life of food. It is basically just a small plastic packet filled with a unique mix of iron powder and a special type of salt. Whenever Oxygen comes into contact with the packet, a simple chemical reaction instantly starts to take place that effectively removes all of the Oxygen present inside the freshly sealed Mylar Pro Bag.

The next time you buy a name brand and commercially sealed bag of say beef jerky, dehydrated fruit, or certain snacks, pay close attention and you will probably see an Oxygen Absorber sitting at the bottom of the container.

Why should I even bother using an Oxygen Absorber? - The bottom line is that Oxygen is a real enemy of successful long term food storage program. If you want to increase the shelf life of your food, then you must remove any Oxygen from coming into contact with your food. Otherwise it will oxidize your food and eliminate such beneficial and nutritional properties as Vitamins A, C, and E. Aside from the bad affects of oxidation, Oxygen also supports the growth of microorganisms like mold, fungi, and aerobic bacteria, Therefore, using our Oxygen Absorbers will help prevent these nasty microorganisms from ever colonizing and destroying your food in the first place. See our more detailed article "four enemies that threaten your long term stored foods" that explain about the perils of Oxygen and 3 other enemies to food storage.

NOTE: Regarding storing refined white sugar granules, though oxygen will not affect its shelf life, some people still chose to use oxygen absorbers with them so that the O2 absorber will remove the oxygen inside the Mylar PRO bag to kill off any potential insects inside from eating the food and prevent the hatching of any insect eggs lurking about. However, the downside to using an oxygen absorber with white refined sugar is that over time it will cause the sugar to clump together and become hard like a brick. It won't hurt the sugar per say, but you would need to smash or break apart the clumps if you wanted to get it back to the more manageable granule state.

Are MylarPro products all "Food Grade" and are they also approved by the FDA? - YES!!! All of the Mylar Pro Products are high food grade and FDA approved. We only sell the highest of quality of products. We wouldn't want to use anything less than that for our families, so why should you settle for a lesser quality imitation product either? Insist on the high quality level of Mylar Pro products.

What size MylarPro Bag do I need and how much product can I store inside them? - Our three main sizes of MylarPro Bags are 8 x 8 inches, 10 x 16 inches, and 20 x 30 inches.

To put these in perspective, basically, the 8x8 inch MylarPro Bag will hold about a Quart of product. As an example, that equates to almost 1.75 pounds of wheat.

The 10x16 inch MylarPro Bag holds a little bit more than 1 Gallon. As an example, that equates to about 8.5 pounds of wheat.

The 20x30 inch MylarPro Bag will easily fit inside a 6 Gallon bucket. As an example, even though the bag could hold much more than 6 Gallons of product, if you were to put the 20x30 MylarPro Bag inside a closed 6 Gallon bucket, it would hold about 45 pounds of wheat.

How can I vacuum seal a Mylar Pro Bag without having to buy a separate and expensive sealer? - Though you can use a commercial sealer, the cheapest way to way to vacuum seal your Mylar Pro Bag is with a common attachment tool from an ordinary vacuum cleaner and a household clothes iron. Watch our complementary video titled "How to Vacuum Seal a Mylar Pro Bag on a Budget" for specific details, tips and techniques.

How thick are Mylar Pro Bags? - All Mylar Pro Bags are at least 4 mil thick. This thickness goes far above and beyond and greatly exceeds the minimum requirements to maintain an effective long term Oxygen barrier. Remember, the space age Mylar ® material does NOT need to be very thick, even the newest NASA spacesuits only needs 7 layers of Mylar ® inside their space suits to protect them from the intense environment of space (NASA Spacesuit Composition). Yes, we will admit that NASA has outdone us. Though our Mylar Pro Bag are multi-layered, we still do not have the full 7 layers that they do. But, then again, since, we doubt you will be storing your food in the super harsh and radioactive environment of outer space, we are confident that you will be exceptionally pleased with extraordinary quality level of a USA made Mylar Pro Bag.

Note: Once man starts to colonize Mars, we will consider making a special edition Mylar Pro Bag with the seven full layers of Mylar®. But until then, enjoy the super high quality Earth version of a USA made Mylar Pro Bag :-)

Are Mylar Pro Bags airtight? - YES!!! When you properly seal your Mylar Pro Bag, you will be able to maintain an airtight seal for 40+ years. Watch our complementary video titled "How to Vacuum Seal a Mylar Pro Bag on a Budget" for specific details on an inexpensive and secure way to seal a MylarPro Bag with two common and ordinary household items. To illustrate how air tight and water tight the seal will become, in the video, it will even show how a 170 pound person can stand on top of a sealed MylarPro bag that is filled with water and it does not burst or leak whatsoever.

Do MylarPro Bags keep out sunlight? - YES!!! Our MylarPro Bags were engineered to include a special foil layer that virtually blocks out all light. When you include an Oxygen Absorber inside a properly sealed Mylar Pro Bag, you will effectively eliminate two of the "four enemies that threaten your long term stored foods".

How do Oxygen Absorbers actually work? - Oxygen Absorbers work on account of simple chemistry. In simple terms, an Oxygen Absorber is basically just a plastic packet filled with a unique mix of iron powder and a special type of salt. When Oxygen comes into contact with the air permeable packet, a chemical reaction instantly starts to take place and two separate byproducts are created. The primary reaction will cause the Iron (Fe) and Oxygen (O2) to permanently bind together to form Iron Oxide (a.k.a. Rust or Fe2O3) and the second byproduct will be a trace amount of water vapor being released. The end result of this chemical reaction is that it will reliably bring down the Oxygen and CO2 levels down to approximately 0% inside your sealed MylarPro Bag.

The reason for the addition of the special salts to the mix is to act as a catalyst to make the chemical reaction happen much faster (making a process that could normally take weeks or months to happen in a matter of hours instead). The end result is that the iron powder will continue to suck out all the Oxygen present until all of the iron has completely rusted. Therefore, that is why you always want to use an Oxygen Absorber that has a cc rating that is slightly higher than the actual volume of Oxygen that is present inside the sealed Mylar Pro bag. See our "Quick Reference Oxygen Absorber Chart" for more details on picking a suitable sized Oxygen Absorber.

How long does it take for an Oxygen Absorber to start to work? - The oxygen absorbers will technically start to work right away. However, it does take a while for them to build up momentum. For instance, if you were to leave an absorber out in the open air on say a table, you would notice that they would start to get warm in about 15 to 30 minutes from the thermal chemical reaction to oxygen. And you would also note that they would be at the peak absorption capacity in about 1 to 2 hours.

From start to finish, our Oxy Free brand of Oxygen Absorbers will take about 18 to 30 hours to nearly completely remove their rated capacity form inside your Mylar PRO Bag. In general, the more oxygen that is present, the harder the absorber will work. Likewise, as the oxygen levels inside the bag starts to diminish, the slower the absorber will continue to work.

Are all of the Oxygen Absorbers individually wrapped or are all they just in a single master bag? - Well, yes and no. Each oxygen absorber sachet has it's own FDA approved plastic wrapping that safely holds the iron powder and salts inside it. However, though you won't be able to readily see it, there are actually some small perforations in the plastic to allow the flow of air molecules to pass back and forth.

All of the oxygen absorbers are stored in a single vacuum sealed "Master Bag". For instance, if you ordered say a 50 pack of 500cc Oxygen Absorbers, then you would receive 50 different sachets inside a single bag. And once you break the vacuum seal and open that master bag, all of the 50 absorbers will start to be "exposed" to oxygen.

Return to the top of the page

How can I store any unused absorbers once I open up the master bag? - Since the absorbers will be exposed to oxygen once you break the vacuum seal and open the master bag, make sure that you quickly seal up any absorbers that you don't plan on using during that setting in a vacuumed FoodSaver type bag or in a glass canning jar with a gasket so that the unused absorbers will remain fresh and potent for any later date that you decide to store more food. (NOTE: if you don't have a glass canning jar, you should be able to readily find them at your local grocery store or even at a place like Walmart for just a few dollars).

Will Oxygen Absorbers remove the fresh smell and taste of my product and emit any harmful gases? - NO!!! The only thing that Oxygen Absorbers will remove is Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide. Therefore, once the Oxygen and CO2 is removed, the remaining concentration of air will consist of 98%+ Nitrogen. The good news is that Nitrogen is an inert gas and is very friendly to food. Likewise, there are no harmful gases being emitted during the chemical reaction, rather, there is just a trace amount of water vapor being created. And, best of all, since our specially designed MylarPro Bags have a built in aroma barrier properties, you will be pleased to know that your food will continue to smell and taste fresh even after being stored for decades.

What should I do if my dog, or god forbid my child, eats an Oxygen Absorber? - Oops, your pet or your child just ate an Oxygen Absorber... is it time to freak out? Normally you would think so, especially since the phrase "DO NOT EAT" is emblazoned and repeated over and over again in big letters on the outside of every Oxygen Absorber packet.

However, just because it says "DO NOT EAT", it does NOT mean that the ingredients are toxic. Rather, they put that phrase on the outside so that someone does not mistakenly think that the packet includes some type of edible food material. Like perhaps, someone might think that it is some form of a seasoning packet or something like that.

But think about it rationally; the packet just contains iron and salts. You see, in actuality, we eat the ingredients from Oxygen Absorbers almost everyday. Most everyone has at least some form of iron in their diet, and even if you don't actually use salt to season your food, it is still extremely difficult to completely eliminate salt or sodium from our diet (especially if you ever eat out or if you ever buy pre-packaged meals from the grocery store).

With this said, by no means do we advocate that you eat the ingredients inside the Oxygen Absorber, rather we just want you to know that should one be accidentally ingested, that there is no need to panic. Rather, we would recommend that they drink a lot of extra water to help flush the higher than normal concentration of salts from their system.
